MTV's hit comedy series "Awkward" recently concluded its fifth season, but the show's fate still hangs in the balance as the network is currently undecided if season 6 will push through.

Could this be the end of the road for the series? Executive producer Mike Chessler seems confident that the season ended the way they wanted it to be. "We always thought it should feel like the ending of a chapter," Chessler told TV Line. "We really wanted this finale to have pivotal moments for all of the characters, most importantly for Matty and Jenna, since that's the central relationship of the show. It does feel complete in its own way."

If the show will indeed continue for another season, it might be far from what the viewers expect. The story will likely tackle various phases in the life of each character, and it will be completely different from the previous chapters. "It would be a very different," Chessler explained. "We'd jump ahead in time again, and there have been conversations about having it in a different city with a different feel. The reason I said this episode is the close of one chapter is because, if there were to be another chapter, it would be a very different phase of [the characters' lives]. We'd really turn the show on its ear."

There is also a possibility that the romance between Jenna (Ashley Rickards) and Matty (Beau Mirchoff) will be explored further. The EP's plan for a time jump will definitely open more story arcs which will make room for the characters to grow.

Even if they are confident with the show's ending, executive producer Chris Alberghini mentioned that the showrunners and cast members are more than interested to do season 6. However, the decision to continue or ax the show is still up to MTV. "We as the showrunners certainly believe there are plenty more stories left to tell, and we're excited about the potential to do so," said the EP. "But we don't control the fate of the show. It's just a matter of MTV deciding what fits into their schedule next year and how many shows they're going to have. We're certainly interested, and most of the cast is interested."

As of this writing, the network has yet to announce if "Awkward" will be renewed for another season.
