'Chicago Med' season 2 release date, spoilers & plot news: Colin Donnell weighs in on new season set for September

Dr. Rhodes faced the biggest surgery of his life in the season 1 finale of "Chicago Med." | NBC

Last Tuesday marked the end of the road for the freshman run of spinoff series "Chicago Med," and it featured an emotional episode as Dr. Downey accepted his fate after his cancer worsened. In the final scene, Dr. Rhodes scattered Dr. Downey's ashes in Hawaii's ocean.

The finale left off with some loose ends, and viewers expect to get answers in the upcoming season. April is torn between her love life and career while Dr. Reese is unsure of what she wants to do after losing her job. Goodwin faced marital problems which ended up with her husband leaving her, and Dr. Choi worries for his pet parrot who apparently has PTSD. Undoubtedly, season 2 will kick off with the characters adjusting to a lot of major transitions in their personal lives. On the other hand, how each of the characters will deal with their own issues remains to be seen, but it will definitely be nothing short of interesting.

In an interview with Hollywood Life, actor Colin Donnell who plays the role of Dr. Rhodes weighed in the show's heart-breaking finale and what's to come for season 2. "It's a great place to end season one; it just provides such a cool launching point for our second season," Donnell said, looking back at the season 1 finale. "And I know they've got some major, major plans for [next season]. The end of season one is awesome. It's a great way to wrap up what we feel like is a first season."

NBC renewed the series for a second season last February, but as of the moment, the network has yet to announce an official premiere date for "Chicago Med" season 2. Based on speculations, the series will likely premiere sometime in early September, airing every Thursday night at 9 p.m. EST.
