'Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel' DLC release date and news: Gameplay footage leaked online

The first "Dark Souls 3" DLC is said to arrive next month. | Steam

A lot of fans are waiting for the upcoming "Dark Souls III" downloadable content (DLC) pack, "The Ashes of Ariandel." The expansion takes players to the icy town of Ariandel where they have to uncover the truth behind the mysteries of the area.

New gameplay footage has been leaked online and it gives gamers a little taste of what to expect from the DLC.

The footage is roughly four minutes long and it's enough to showcase a lot of the features in the new expansion. First, the clip shows the player fighting in a frozen forest being attacked by a group of tall soldiers. Some of them can even control fire. Then the clip fades into a fight between one of the bigger bosses in the battle and the gamer is given the option to switch from his dual-wield shield and sword combo to a two-handed longsword.

More locations are showcased in the game as the player moves into a red field that looks like the nest of giant fly creatures. There is also what seems to be an icy flower garden where the player has to flit around and fight a gigantic wolf.

It may be considered as a spoiler but there is a scene in a castle hall where the player has to fight a woman wielding a scythe. She says a few lines then the fight transitions to a bigger boss battle where a giant monster who seems to be permanently seated on a throne fights with a giant cauldron filled with scorching hot magma.

The expansion is said to be the last of Form Software's "Dark Souls" franchise as the creator of the series, Hidetaka Miyazaki, says to GGN Gamer that his company wants to focus more on making different games in the future. As of now, "Dark Souls" is "over."

"Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel" comes out on Oct. 25.
