'Devious Maids' season 5 canceled: Why was 'Devious Maids' canceled?

Liftetime's comedy-drama TV series "Devious Maids" will not be renewed for a fifth season. Season 4 of the show, which ended last Aug. 8, will be its last.

Although the network and the showrunners have not given fans a reason for the show's cancellation, Deadline suggested that it could be due to the gradual flop in ratings

A source reported that the show managed to get three million live and same-day viewers for season 1. On the other hand, the latest season only got an average of 0.923 million viewers. The show experienced a steady decline in viewership each season but its average for season 4 remained consistent throughout the season. Furthermore, the show's average number of viewers was still twice more than Lifetime's original TV show "UnReal."

Fans expressed confusion and disappointment with Lifetime's decision. On Twitter, they asked Anna Ortiz, who portrayed Marisol on the show, about her character's fate and the series' cancellation. In one of her responses, Ortiz tweeted, "Can't tell you what I don't know. #askLifetime"

To note, season 4 ended with a big cliffhanger – Marisol's disappearance on her wedding day. Various rumors came up that suggested kidnapping or cold feet. But now that the show was abruptly terminated, fans will never know what happened to the series' lead character.

It seems like fans weren't the only ones caught off guard. Previously, executive producer Sabrina Wind was interviewed by TVLine in August and implied the possibility of season 5. When asked about Marisol's disappearance, Wind told TVLine," We have many thoughts of what it all means." The showrunner even told the news outlet that the upcoming season will have a completely new story.

In response to the cancellation, the main cast of "Devious Maids" turned to their respective social media platforms to thank the fans for their support throughout the series' four seasons.
