'Fear the Walking Dead' season 2 spoilers: 'The Walking Dead' crossover unlikely at the moment but might happen in the future

A crossover between "The Walking Dead" and its spinoff "Fear the Walking Dead" might sound amazing, but is very unlikely to happen despite being suggested by Robert Kirkman, the man behind the source material for the former.

During the Hawaii Comic-Con, Kirkman hinted via Comicbook.com: "As far as if those characters will ever encounter each other, I mean, they're in the same universe so it's completely possible."

The challenge lies in the timeline they are in— "Fear the Walking Dead" happens before "The Walking Dead." There's also the issue of where these two groups are located.

"Geographically, they're nowhere near each other so it would be somewhat far-fetched if group A were to somehow encounter group B unless over the course of many, many, many, many seasons somehow it made sense," he explained.

"Fear the Walking Dead" executive producer Dave Erickson also believes it will be impossible for this crossover to work, even if they are two different worlds of the same universe.

He told TV Line that the spinoff "didn't come from the comic, so some tectonic plates would have to shift to make [a crossover] happen." Playing with the ongoing narrative will be very tricky as well.

What's more, "The Walking Dead," which is now headed to season 7, is so far ahead of "Fear the Walking Dead," which is just at season 2.

In addition, like what Kirkman said, Erickson believes that where the groups are geography-wise will not make sense of the crossover.

"The Walking Dead" season 7 will premiere this fall while "Fear the Walking Dead" season 2 is currently on a break, with episode 8 set to air on Aug. 21 at 9 p.m. EDT on AMC.

When the show returns, fans will see Chris (Lorenzo Henrie) continue his downward spiral and struggle with the thought of being hated by the group. Ofelia (Mercedes Masohn) will be under the impression that her father Daniel (Ruben Blades).
