'Mass Effect: Andromeda' release date latest news: Development is ongoing; younger cast of characters to be led by Ryder

Despite the lack of official updates on "Mass Effect: Andromeda," fans of BioWare's upcoming action role-playing third-person shooter video game will be happy to know that it is definitely coming along.

Earlier this month, Mac Walters, BioWare's creative director for the "Mass Effect" franchise, posted an update on Twitter, saying, "Officially at that point where so much amazing work goes into the build every day, there's hardly enough time to review it all. #MEAndromeda"

Prior to this tweet, the last "Mass Effect: Andromeda" update fans got was back at this year's E3, when a new teaser trailer for the game was dropped. Nonetheless, it sounds as though BioWare is working hard at building the game.

So far, some of the major details that have been revealed about "Andromeda" include a new setting (the neighboring Andromeda galaxy) and a new protagonist. It has also been said that the new game will take place long after the original "Mass Effect" trilogy.

According to Polygon, "Mass Effect" producer Mike Gamble has confirmed that the new "Andromeda" hero will have the handle "Ryder" and that he will be part of a younger cast of characters that will be introduced in the upcoming game.

"This is a story about becoming a hero," Walters told Polygon at E3 in June.

But while "Mass Effect: Andromeda" will be vastly different from its predecessors, Walters also said that it still captures the essence of the "Mass Effect" trilogy.

"I think ultimately again, when you looked at the first game, there's a sense that you got to experience everything for the first time," he said. "We wanted to be able to create that again, whether it was for a new player or for an existing player, things are gonna be new again. Given that we had sort of laid out most of the Milky Way for you, regardless of timeline or anything like that, it felt like going to another galaxy offered us that opportunity."

BioWare and EA are said to be targeting an early 2017 release for "Mass Effect: Andromeda."
