Nintendo NX release date, specs rumors: Console expected to be Nintendo's most successful yet

Retailer GameStop believes that the Nintendo NX "could be huge," according to the electronics retail company's projection of the highly-anticipated console.

During the company's earnings call, GameStop Executive Vice President of Strategy and Business Development Mike Hogan laid out the potentials of the upcoming Nintendo platform.

"Should the new NX perform only slightly better than the Wii U, it would generate 2.7 billion dollars in incremental sales over the first two years," Hogan said via Wccftech.

"Should it perform at even half of the level of the Wii, it would generate 7.5 billion units of incremental sales over that time frame. You can, of course, apply GameStop's market share to estimate the impact on GameStop's sales," he added.

Hogan also said that there's "a little bit of an advantage" if Nintendo NX will use game cartridges instead of optical discs as the former, which were rendered obsolete 20 years ago, are "much simpler" to revamp and repackage.

Up until now, Nintendo hasn't said anything about what the NX would be like or what it would offer. There are rumors it will be a home system with a connectable handheld controller.

Nintendo NX was delayed to March 2017 from a holiday release so that Nintendo can accumulate a library of assorted launch titles that players can try out on the console.

"The Legend of Zelda" is one of the games set to be released for the Nintendo NX. The action-adventure title was supposed to be released on the Wii U later this year as well.

On the other hand, GameStop expects to see console announcements in the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016 scheduled June 14 to 16.

Rumor has it that both Sony and Microsoft also have something to offer from that department in the upcoming convention. With regards to Nintendo NX, fans will simply have to wait for Nintendo to be ready to talk about the console formally.
