'Pitch Perfect 3' release date, cast news and spoilers: Skylar Astin says Treblemakers will not be included in upcoming sequel

Production for "Pitch Perfect 3" has not been smooth sailing, as evidenced by changes in its director and release date. Now, it has been revealed that not all of the beloved characters from the previous installments will be returning for the third film in the musical comedy franchise.

Skylar Astin, who played Jesse Swanson in both "Pitch Perfect" and "Pitch Perfect 2," recently announced that he and the other members of the Treblemakers will not be appearing in the upcoming film.

"As of now, the Trebles and I won't be in the third Pitch Perfect movie. They seem to be taking the story in a different direction," the actor revealed on Twitter.

Astin's recent revelation ties back to what Adam DeVine said back in July. DeVine played Bumper Allen, the Treblemakers leader in "Pitch Perfect" who became Fat Amy's (Rebel Wilson) love interest in the sequel.

"I don't know. I honestly don't. I'm not super close. I think it was, like, script stuff. They haven't fully locked in the story. I don't even know if I'm gonna be in it or not. They did not have me sign on," DeVine told The Los Angeles Times when asked about the film's delay.

The changes in the movie franchise's direction is somewhat expected given that most of the Barden Bellas graduated in "Pitch Perfect 2." While the first two movies featured the adventures of Barden University's female a capella group, the next installment could feature the members out in the real world. However, at this time, no specific details about the plot have been revealed.

Nevertheless, "Pitch Perfect" fans can expect the return of most of the cast members including Wilson, Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp and Hailee Steinfeld. There could also be new faces joining "Pitch Perfect 3." Earlier this week, Variety reported that Ruby Rose was in talks to join the cast of the upcoming movie. Unfortunately, a character description for her role has yet to be revealed.

"Pitch Perfect 3" is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on Dec. 22, 2017.
