The film is based on the journals of Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine shooting. Before Scott was killed, one of the shooters reportedly asked her, "Do you still believe in you God?" Scott replied, "You know that I do."

The tragedy took the lives of 11 other students and one teacher. Robertson was only 2 years old when the tragedy occured but it made a lasting impact on her after she learned the whole story behind the shooting.

"Everybody has heard of the Columbine shooting and it's a tragedy, but Rachel Scott's story is — even though she did pass away — her story is not about her death, it's about her life," Robertson said in an interview with The Church Boys. "And it's kind of bringing light into a really dark situation," she added.

Robertson reflected on the positive things that came after the tragic event.

"A lot of times, the big news only captures the darkness and the bad parts of the story and the terrible things that happen, but they forget to go back and capture the good things that happened," Robertson said. She surmised that many people have turned to Christianity because of Scott's story.

Robertson's role as Charity is her first attempt to act in a film. Robertson also appeared in the movie "God's Not Dead 2" which was released earlier in April but was shot after "I'm Not Ashamed." Her mother Korie and her younger sister Bella will also appear in the upcoming film.

Newcomer Masey McLain plays the role of Rachel Scott. Other members of the cast include Ben Davies, Jennifer O'Neill and Jaci Velazquez. The film was directed by Brian Baugh. "I'm Not Ashamed" will be released in theaters across the U.S. on Oct. 21.
