It was Robert Downey, Jr. himself who confirmed that there would be a third installment to the blockbuster sleuthing franchise, but since then no definite timeframe has been given for "Sherlock Holmes 3's" production.

Downey, Jr. told Shortlist in an interview last April that he and director Guy Ritchie are talking about the third offering and that they can "do some preliminary stuff." He was candid enough to admit that their tight schedules were to blame for the seemingly delayed follow-up to 2011's "A Game of Shadows."

It would be remembered that Holmes had to fake his death following his fight with his nemesis Moriarty, so fans are much eager to find out what happens next.

Not much has been shared after that Downey, Jr. interview, but it looks like producer Joel Silver would do everything he can to make sure production happens this year. Apparently, a follow-up has been in the works ever since the second installment tilled $545 million worldwide, and all they need is sync the schedules of Downey, Jr., Jude Law and Ritchie to make everything fall into place.

In an exclusive interview with Collider, Silver said the cameras could start rolling for "Sherlock Holmes 3" this Fall. He said they would try to get it done and take advantage of the small window in Downey, Jr.'s schedule since he would have to shoot "Avengers: Infinity War" after the New Year. Silver added that they already have a good script.

"Jude [Law] is available and Downey is available, and we're hoping we can get it done. If it works, great. If not, we'll do it another time. But, it looks like it could happen now," he told Collider.

Silver also teased that "Sherlock Holmes 3" may not be the last one in the series, saying they can work with it "as long as there's a character" and "as long as people want to do it."
