'Sherlock' season 4 air date news update: First official photo reveals brooding Sherlock Holmes and John Watson

Det. Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) both look dapper in the first official photo for the much-anticipated "Sherlock" season 4.

Production wrapped up last week and it's just a matter of months until viewers see the mystery-solving duo together again. In the latest image for the show's upcoming season, Sherlock is seen sporting a modern suit while John wore his practical black coat. Nothing has changed in Sherlock's look but John's hair appear to be extra silvery. If one thing is for certain, the picture promises that the bromance between the two will continue after a long break.

In a recent interview with BBC Breakfast, actor/writer Mark Gatiss confirmed an early 2017 release for the series. He also shared intriguing teasers on what fans should look forward to. "We've just finished filming the fourth series, we finished about four nights ago," he said. "It'll be on, probably at the beginning of next year when it usually is. We're very excited about it. I think it's the best one we've done, it's very big chewy stuff, meaty." Additionally, "life changing things" are up ahead in the next installment.

Season 4 will see Sherlock and John as they deal with the unexpected return of Moriarty (Andrew Scott). Aside from their old foe, the two will face off against a menacing new villain named Culverton Smith ("Wayward Pines" alum Toby Jones). Meanwhile, John and his wife Mary (Amanda Abbington) will embark on their journey as first-time parents. 

Executive producer Steven Moffat previously hinted that Culverton is the "darkest villain" they've had in the series, stressing that he's the "purest evil" which makes Sherlock appalled by his presence. "He's the most evil villain we've had. I don't think that when you see it, you will disagree. He's horrific," the EP continued.

"Sherlock" season 4 is expected to premiere on January 2017.
