PlayStation NEO release date news: Console development confirmed by AMD?

PlayStation 4 | SONY

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc or AMD may have just confirmed the development of the rumored Sony PlayStation NEO or PlayStation 4.5. According to reports AMD is said to be developing the 14nm CPU for the much-anticipated console.

During the recently concluded 2016 Investor Day, the American multinational semiconductor company has revealed their roadmap and plans for the next few months and years. The "new semi-custom business in 2H 2016" project that was claimed by the company during the event has caught the attention of tech observers. There are speculations that the upcoming project will be for the Nintendo NX console.

However, VR World reported that there is no significant evidence to suggest that the claim is legit.

Nonetheless, tech observers believe that the new AMD's Polaris could be developed for Sony PlayStation NEO or the PlayStation 4.5, which both have been a subject of numerous rumors on the internet for some time.

The current PlayStation 4 console is said to be one of the most powerful gaming devices today. It's GPU clocks at 800 MHz; however, the new GPU for the upcoming PlayStation 4K clocks at 911 MHz. It is already an upgrade and there are also report suggesting that the number of core units of the processor will also be increased of up to 2500.

If Sony decides to build a new console that will run video game titles at 4K resolution, the company will need a more powerful CPU and GPU to support it. According to a report by TechFrag Sony has asked AMD to mirror the 14 nm FinFET Polaris GPU design for their upcoming PlayStation NEO. The current generation of consoles from all manufacturers still uses the 28 nm planar transistors, which is said to be good enough for today's game titles but is unable to support full 4K technology.

There have been speculations that PlayStation NEO will debut at the Tokyo Game Show with Nintendo NX in September 2016.
