"Star Wars Rebels" season 3 is rumored to bring Darth Maul back, the powerful Sith who was introduced in the first "Star Wars" prequel film "The Phantom Menace."

Darth Maul, who appeared to have met his demise at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the said movie, is said to appear in "Star Wars Rebels" season 3.

According to reports, it will be revealed that Darth Maul did not die after his battle with Obi-Wan. It is expected that in "Star Wars Rebels" season 3, he will face off with Darth Vader.

Although Darth Maul will finally be in "Star Wars Rebels" season 3, he won't exactly be the focus of the show and neither is his conflict with Darth Vader.

"That's another bit of wonderful story, which is: What has Maul been up to? How did Maul get on this desolate planet?" Star Wars Rebels" director Dave Filoni mused in an interview with IGN.

"And we obviously don't answer those questions at this time, but it is stuff we've considered when we wrote these stories. It never came to be that he would face off with Vader, at least not yet," he continued.

From what he said, it appears that "Star Wars Rebels" season 3 won't be the stage for the Vader vs. Maul, which many fans have been dying to see.

In other related news, inclusion of characters from "Star Wars Legends," formerly known as the franchise's Expanded Universe, will appear in the new season.

The rumors intensified following a tweet by Filoni, where he announced his participation in the Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016 scheduled next month.

It is still a mystery if he was referring to the integration of the Expanded Universe in "Star Wars Rebels" season 3, but fans won't have to wait that long to find out.

Filoni is expected to share details about the upcoming season of the series in the upcoming SWCE on July 15 to 17, 2016 at the ExCeL London Exhibition Centre.
