'The Punisher' Netflix premiere date news: Series may debut in 2017; synopsis revealed

Netflix may be launching its latest Marvel superhero series "The Punisher" earlier than expected.

Eagle-eyed fans recently discovered that the much-awaited series may premiere next year after a vague synopsis was released on Netflix's mobile app. The show's landing page indicates a "2017" launch date, with a summary that reads, "After the murder of his family, Frank Castle is both haunted and hunted. In the criminal underworld, he'll become known as The Punisher."

Moviepilot points out that the network usually posts synopses for upcoming series a year before its premiere.

The Punisher aka Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) made his television debut during the second season of "Daredevil" back in March. Because of his bold character, Netflix decided to greenlight a stand-alone series. Previous reports claimed the new show will not roll out until 2018 since Netflix usually releases individual seasons of only two Marvel programs each year.

The first seasons of Marvel favorites "Daredevil" and "Jessica Jones" arrived in 2015. "Luke Cage" and the second season of "Daredevil" are both set to come out this 2016, while new shows "Iron Fist" and "The Defenders" are slated for a 2017 release. However, it seems "The Punisher" will be the first to break Netflix's trend next year, as Inverse points out.

Plot details on "The Punisher" are still kept under wraps, but Bernthal previously shared an interesting spoiler during an interview for "Daredevil" season 2.

"The Frank Castle you find in this story is not The Punisher," Bernthal told Awards Daily. The actor hinted that his new show will revolve around an origin story instead of a continuation of his stint in "Daredevil." His main goal is to avenge the death of his family "as brutally as possible."
