Mystery science fiction series "Wayward Pines" will return to the small screen tonight for its sophomore run, and the story will pick up on the events after the major shocker in season 1.

According to the official synopsis for tonight's episode 1 titled "Enemy Lies," the plot starts with the Wayward Pines residents continuing their battle against the First Generation's rule. Dr. Theo Yedlin (Jason Patric), a new resident of Wayward Pines, enters the picture as he wakes up from "suspended animation." He realizes that he is in the middle of a huge rebellion, so he tries to understand everything about Wayward Pines and help protect the human race.

Original resident and historian CJ Mitchum (Djimon Hounsou) will also help using his extensive knowledge of the town's origins, as he can provide a "unique bridge" to link the current state of Wayward Pines and the previous area humans once inhabited. Megan Fisher (Hope Davis) is tasked with the scientific studies about the Abbies, and she is very much involved in developing the humanity's future — the "First Generation" of Wayward Pines.

Also featured in the show are characters including Jason Higgins (Tom Stevens, who is a member of the First Generation and the young acolyte of town founder David, Rebecca (Nimrat Kaur) who has secrets she keeps from her own husband, Xander Beck (Josh Helman) who is a town resident who has hidden plans, and Kerry Campbell (Kacey Rohl) who is one of Jason's trusted lieutenants.

Executive producer M. Night Shyamalan recently caught up with Entertainment Weekly where he discussed his plans for the show's return. Aside from the new set of characters and their own arcs, the EP mentioned that the show will also focus on the Abbies."...this is the season about the Abbies, about what they are and how do they think and who they are. [Season 2] feels much more muscular, because the premise is outed. You can have more fun. In the first season, the first part had to be a dark mystery with a dark comedy edge to it, and then in the second half, it's sci-fi. Now, there's more chance for muscularity and bigger questions to be asked," he said.

Keep tuning in for all-new episodes of "Wayward Pines" season 2 which airs every Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST on FOX.
