'Wayward Pines' season 3 air date, spoilers news 2016: Thousand-year time jump to reveal new enemies for human race?

The executive producers of Fox's "Wayward Pines" have already teased that season 3 might see humans and Abbies living peacefully together. However, that compelling idea may happen after a thousand-year time jump.

It will be recalled that during the season 2 finale, an Abby was seen carrying a newborn in her arms. The baby looked so much like a human, but there wasn't enough time to explore whose baby it was or what breed it was. Still, that final scene was pretty much summed up by one of the promotional photos used for "Wayward Pines" season 2 (as seen above), which shows a tiny human hand clutching an Abby's finger.

That promotional still was an Easter egg after all, giving away early on what the future holds for the series, although people were unprepared to realize what it meant back then. At any rate, the photo only served to underscore what M. Night Shyamalan teased about the upcoming season, which will probably be the last for the series based on Blake Crouch's literary work.

There are reports saying "Wayward Pines" season 3 will feature a thousand-year time jump during which time a new breed will probably arise among the Abbies. Actually, it will be more of the Abbies evolving into something that resembles human beings, albeit not entirely. Hence, the humans who will wake up after 1,000 years could see a different breed of Abbies inhabiting the earth.

It remains to be seen whether this new breed of evolved Abbies will be humans' new enemies. After all, fans will recall that there was an impending Abby attack about to happen just before the humans went to sleep in the season 2 finale. Will the Abbies remember that attack and be on the offensive when humans wake up after a thousand years?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly right after the airing of the season 2 finale, co-executive producers Crouch and Shyamalan said the crux of "Wayward Pines" season 3 is the exploration of human behavior when at the brink of extinction. Hence, fans and viewers of the series can expect that to happen when the third season returns.

"Wayward Pines" season 3 is expected to premiere summer of 2017 on Fox.
