'Winds of Winter' release date news update: New information hints book's imminent release

"Winds of Winter" may finally be close to seeing the light of day, according to a new piece of information dug up by Reddit user Burnfyre.

Publisher Penguin Random House appears to have registered an International Standard Book Number or ISBN for George R.R. Martin's highly anticipated "Game of Thrones" book.

George R.R. Martin, author of the "Song of Ice and Fire" fantasy series that is the basis of the television series "Game of Thrones", gestures during his masterclass at the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) in Neuchatel on July 10, 2014. | Reuters/Denis Balibouse

This suggests that "Winds of Winter" is being readied for an imminent release. However, this is not the entire implication of the ISBN number.

"Then again, HarperCollins reportedly registered 9780002247412 over a year ago. This too, is in fact quite possibly the real deal according to the Global Register [of Publishers," Burnfyre wrote.

"There was a huge spoilery synopsis associated with it, which led people to believe it was fake," the Reddit user continued to explain. With that said, "Winds of Winter" could still be a long way off.

The sixth entry in the bestselling "A Song of Ice and Fire" saga by Martin has had fans at the edge of their seats for half a decade now. It was 2011 since the fifth novel "A Dance of Dragons" was revealed.

It is speculated that "Winds of Winter" will not be released this year, although Martin himself hasn't spoken about the timing of the release.

The bestselling author actually shies away from doing so, but he continues to make efforts in completing the book as soon as possible. As much as he could, Martin strays from accepting projects and attending conventions.

In fact, he is leaving it his assistant for the television series adaptation of his widely acclaimed book series "Wild Cards." Despite this, there's no word how far along he is in the novel.

For now, fans will have to continue the wait for "Winds of Winter." There are hopes that it will be ready by the end of the year, but the other belief is that 2017 is the year it comes out.
