Oscar Isaac is set to don the mantle of Apocalypse in the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse" film. Sources say the actor has inked a deal to play the main villain in the upcoming film from the X-Men franchise which is due for release in 2016.

A few days ago, the Internet was ablaze with speculation from fans that Idris Elba was in contention for the role along with two other actors. Other fans speculated that Tom Hardy was the top actor being considered for the role. However, just after Elba's name started making the rounds, it was announced that Isaac had landed the role.

Isaac has a number of films to his credit. He recently turned in a great performance in "Inside Llewyn Davis." His latest film is "A Most Violent Year" along with Jessica Chastain which is due to premiere next month.

Isaac is also set to appear in the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" film which will be released next year. The trailer for the "Star Wars" film is due to debut this Thanksgiving in select theaters.

In the X-Men universe, the villain Apocalypse is a terrifyingly powerful mutant. He was glimpsed at the end of the "X-Men: Days of Future Past" film, telekinetically moving giant blocks and building the pyramids in ancient Egypt. In that film, a younger version of Apocalypse was shown which indicated that the plot would also involve his origin in Egypt.

A major portion of "X-Men: Apocalypse" will take place in the 1980s and feature younger people roped in to play familiar characters from the X-Men films.

Also scheduled to appear in the film are James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence. IGN notes that Hugh Jackman could return as the Wolverine as the character does not age and was pretty young in the 80s.

Production for "X-Men: Apocalypse" is due to begin in April of next year with Bryan Singer directing.
