AMD Zen Summit Ridge Processors news, updates: Processor to come in 3 variants; chip to be released at CES 2017?
Codenamed "Summit Ridge," AMD's upcoming Zen-based desktop processor lineup is one of the much-hyped processors to come out next year. While fans await its launch, new details about the processor's naming schemes and pricing have been revealed.
Naming schemes
According to reports, a forum message originally posted on Chiphell before it got removed revealed a presentation slide for AMD. It shows the name of three upcoming Zen products indicating its different tiers to be used on various devices. SR3 is for the entry-level version, SR5 for the mid-range and SR7 for the high-end.
Pricing
All three variants are reportedly priced higher than the fastest AM4 APU. Fudzilla notes that the previously revealed AMD presentation suggests all Zen parts should be priced above $218. However, a Maxsun e-mail leaked last week claims that it can be priced up to $290. Meanwhile, an overclocked version is believed to be launched for $500. Although a definitive price has yet to be announced, it clearly shows that all of AMD's Zen chips are expected to have a higher price than its seventh-gen socket AM4 APU Bristol Ridge.
Specs
In a previous AMD Zen presentation, the chip maker featured the benchmarks done on the processor's engineering sample. Based on the chip's performance, it is quite clear that the new product shows a lot of potential.
The engineering sample was reportedly run clock-for-clock alongside AMD's very own FX-8350 and the Intel i5-4670K. The test results indicate that the upcoming processor is able to run 10 percent faster than the Intel processor. Compared to its AMD predecessor, the latest chip's test results registered a 40 percent increase in efficiency. During the test, the sample used has a 2.8 GHz base frequency and a 3 GHz boost.
The AMD Zen Summit Ridge Processor is expected to be officially released early next year at the CES 2017.
