Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Now on 9 Percent of Android Devices; Figure Expected to Double in June
Nine percent of Android devices are now running Android 5.0 Lollipop—an almost 100 percent jump from just a month ago (5.4 percent at the beginning of April).
It is highly probable the number will double again in June as the mobile OS is steadily becoming more available for smartphones and tablets.
Google has shared the results of its seven-day analytics study ending May 4 on mobile OS activities as monitored by Android devices accessing the Google Play Store.
The Android platform charts revealed the stats of earlier Android software versions. KitKat boasted of 41.4 percent share of devices last month but dropped to 29.8 percent in May. Jelly Bean dropped from 40.7 percent to 29.2 percent. Android 2.2 Froyo is on its way out, dropping to .3 percent install percentages and will likely drop off the stats chart within the month.
Android 5.1 Lollipop will debut next month on Nexus devices. This will be followed by Android M.
The availability of Android 5.0 Lollipop has been touted by the Android developer community as the "largest and most ambitious release," offering a slew of new features and thousands of application-programming interfaces or APIs. The extensive features allow songs, apps and even search efforts on one Android device to be shared to others. Android 5.0 Lollipop has more battery-saving features and smart lock to secure the device with another trusted device such as a car or a wearable device. One new feature includes a brand-new 3D view and built-in activity transitions. All these new features contribute to a more powerful, smoother and swifter experience.
The number of devices running Android 5.0 Lollipop is expected to surpass 10 percent in the next statistical graph. Three weeks ago, Samsung debuted its highly anticipated Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones, which arrived with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box. Shortly after, Samsung began releasing the next version, Android 5.1.1, which has a guest feature allowing another person to use the same device.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 is still going strong, with all top US carriers releasing Android 5.0 Lollipop to update the handset. The update is also rapidly spreading abroad, with Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Colombia, Italy and Croatia as the latest recipients. More activity is expected in Australia, where S5 users haven't gotten access yet.
Samsung Galaxy S4 users on Verizon are just starting to get the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, same as those on AT&T.
