'Annabelle 2' release date, spoilers: Sequel will be scarier; Annabelle-Chucky team-up possible
"Annabelle 2," the sequel to the 2014 film about the creepy doll in "The Conjuring" (2013), is said to be an even bigger fright fest than the original.
The sequel, which sees Annabelle terrorizing a nun and several girls from an orphanage, will reportedly be scarier than the first film.
The spinoff series inspired by "The Conjuring" tells the story of Annabelle Higgins, the ghost inhabiting a doll that haunted two women in the 2013 film about the exploits of Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga).
But while "Annabelle" was a commercial success, the haunted doll concept in horror films is nothing new. The "Child's Play" franchise, which debuted in the '80s, has also made a killing in the box office and introduced an iconic character, Chucky, the demonic doll with a penchant for killing anyone who gets in his way. So far, six "Child's Play" films have been released, with a seventh reportedly in development.
In 2014, shortly after "Annabelle" came out, Don Mancini, who wrote the "Child's Play" films, expressed his hope for a future crossover between the two horror film franchises.
In an interview with USA Today, Mancini said: "I am hoping that at some future point we have Annabelle and Chucky team up. We would be into it, the only problem is that we are in different studios. That would probably be years worth of red tape to work it out. But if it all could be worked out, then yes, we're very into it."
Mancini also revealed that he already has an idea for the team-up in mind, saying that he thinks Annabelle's fighting style is very subtle and that he wants to know if the doll has some secret moves.
"The bride of Chucky is going to be very upset if Chucky starts to stray," Mancini said. "If I were Annabelle, I'd be watching my back," he added.
"Annabelle 2," which stars Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Miranda Otto and Anthony LaPaglia, hits theaters May 19, 2017.
