'Blue Bloods' season 7 spoilers news: Tom Selleck returning for season 7; Frank getting a love interest?
Tom Selleck is set to return as Police Commissioner Frank Reagan in "Blue Bloods" season 7.
The veteran actor leads the popular CBS police procedural drama as Frank, the patriarch of a family of police officers around which the series revolves.
In "Blue Bloods," Frank is a wise and loving father whose multigenerational family of New York City cops includes Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), an NYPD detective, Jamie (Will Estes), an NYPD police officer, and Erin (Bridget Moynahan), the assistant district attorney. Frank's father, Henry (Len Cariou), is a former NYPD cop who also held the position of Police Commissioner.
Deadline confirmed Selleck's return to the series on Thursday, July 7, and said that the actor has signed a deal to stay on the show for at least another season. The website also reported that "Blue Bloods" began production on its next season on Thursday.
Deadline noted that the series, which was created by Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green, has a huge viewership around the globe, making it an important asset of CBS Corp.
The season 6 finale of "Blue Bloods" tackled police shootings and showed the Reagans butting heads over the caught-on-video shooting of a teenager and the shooting of a cop — an act of retaliation — that followed. As usual, Frank was the voice of reason, telling his family that both sides of the conflict need to work on trusting each other.
While it is expected that Frank will continue to be the show's moral guide in the upcoming season, Carter Matt suggested that the character also needs to have a new love interest.
According to the outlet, because it has been some time since Frank lost his wife, it is high time for the show to pair him off with someone new. Giving Frank a new romantic relationship will also serve to highlight an important point, Carter Matt said, which is that love is possible at any age.
"Blue Bloods" season 7 debuts Sept. 23 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
