Chrysler Portal Concept release date, specs news: All-electric minivan designed for millennials revealed at CES 2017
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has introduced the Portal Concept, an all-electric minivan designed specifically for millennials, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017.
"The Chrysler Portal concept is backed by significant research on the millennial generation. Millennials have clearly defined that they want a vehicle that will grow with them as they experience life changes. FCA is a leader in family transportation and it was essential that we fully explored the idea of what a vehicle could look like for this emerging generation," said Tim Kuniskis, head of passenger car brands — Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA — for North America.
According to the automaker, the innovative interpretation of their fifth-generation family transportation has been created for millennials, a generation is described as being tech-savvy, environmentally aware and cost conscious.
With these things in mind, the Chrysler Portal concept was designed with spacious interiors with the ability to function as both seating and cargo. Millennials are also able to stay connected to various social media platforms with seamless wireless integration between the vehicle and their mobile devices. Furthermore, the concept minivan comes with the latest technologies including battery-electric powertrains and high-tech design components.
The Chrysler Portal features a simple yet strong design language. Its exteriors are clean with refined lines and a powerful stance. Opening the double-sliding doors reveals modern interiors with soft and clean lines with a neutral color scheme. Notable features of the concept vehicle include striking LED headlights on the front fascia, a large touchscreen that stretches along the dashboard and the center console and a unique steering wheel flanked by 10 docking stations for mobile devices.
It is powered by a 100-kWh battery pack that is estimated to deliver over 250 miles of driving range on a full charge. The vehicle is said to be able to deliver 150-mile range with just 20 minutes of charging using a 350-kW fast charger. The Chrysler Portal is capable of level three semi-autonomous driving which allows the vehicle to take control during highway driving. An array of sensor technologies also monitor the conditions outside and inside the vehicle.
The Chrysler Portal concept comes with more than 20 technologies that is able to adapt and anticipate the needs of millennials. The infotainment, sensor and software systems allow for facial recognition, voice biometrics, vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and community sharing of music, images and videos, among others.
