'Fast 8' release date, spoilers news: Luke Hobbs is going to prison; Helen Mirren not driving in film
DSS agent Luke Hobbs is going to prison in the next installment of the "Fast & Furious" film series.
In a "Fast 8" set photo recently shared by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on Instagram, Hobbs, who first appeared in the franchise in 2011's "Fast Five," is shackled and dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit. The character, a Diplomatic Security Service agent, seems to have gotten himself in trouble with the law and may be on his way to serve time behind bars.
Hobbs, who was first seen in the "Fast & Furious" franchise when he and his team were arresting Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O'Conner (the late Paul Walker) in Rio de Janeiro, was once a stern law enforcer. However, since getting to know Dom and his crew, Hobbs has walked the fine line between law enforcement and lawlessness.
Now, it appears that the character will be bending the rules a bit — or disregarding them altogether — in the highly anticipated "Fast 8."
Speaking with ComicBook.com, "Fast 8" producer Hiram Garcia spoke about Hobbs, who he said is one of his all-time favorite characters.
"Hobbs was one of the first characters we merged together on and when 'Fast' approached [Dwayne Johnson], telling him about the character they wanted to create, [Dwayne Johnson] and I were able to sit down and craft this guy that we would just laugh out loud at the lines we would come up with," he said.
Meanwhile, Helen Mirren fans who have been looking forward to the Academy Award winner's turn behind the wheel in "Fast 8" may be disappointed to learn that she will not be sitting in the driver's seat for the film.
"I wanted to be driving, but unfortunately, I'm not," Mirren told Entertainment Weekly. "Maybe that will come in the future, in 'Fast and Furious 12.'"
"I'm probably one of the few people on the set who know how to drive a gear shift car," she added, teasing, "I doubt the Rock knows."
"Fast 8" hits theaters April 14, 2017.
