Carrie's continuous struggle with her bipolar disorder and her shaky romance with Quinn are two of the things fans are looking forward to exploring when "Homeland" returns on air this January for its sixth season.

To recall, the season 5 finale saw Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) fighting for dear life after being exposed to lethal gas by jihadists who capture him. There was a touching scene between an unconscious Quinn and a grieving Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), and fans who ship the pair wished their story will continue in the upcoming installment.

However, in an interview with IndieWire, showrunner Alex Gansa makes it clear that Quinn will be so much different this season compared to the previous ones.

"He suffered a major stroke last season and his very existence was in question ... You're going to see a very changed and altered Quinn this year," he said.

Quinn was used as a test subject to see what the effects of sarin gas are by the terrorists who captured him. Hence, season 6 will find Quinn dealing with the aftermath of his horrible experience.

"This coming season, [Quinn] will represent a very profound and familiar casualty of the war on terror for our audience. What he endured last year is different than what he'll go through this year," Gansa added.

It seems likely that Quinn's relationship with Carrie will have to take a backseat what with his condition and Carrie busy with other things, too. One thing's for sure, though. Carrie's bipolar disorder will not bother her as much as it did in the past seasons.

Speaking with Variety, Emmy award winner Danes hints that Carrie will be in a better place mentally when "Homeland" season 6 returns on air. Apparently, Carrie will come to grips with her identity after years of suffering. A more demanding calling in the upcoming season will make Carrie realize that she can fight off her bipolar tendencies.

"Homeland" season 6 is premiering on Jan. 15 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
