The iPad mini was deprived of its annual update last September. However, consumers shouldn't be too disappointed by the non-appearance of the iPad mini 5 as it seems that Apple has other plans for its small tablet lineup. According to reports, the fifth-generation iPad mini will arrive later this year with a new name.

Unlike the iPad Air 3 that has long been rumored to have been discontinued by Apple, it has been suggested that the iPad mini 5 will still see the light of day, albeit in a slightly different form. The 7.9-inch tablet is rumored to be renamed as the iPad mini Pro and will become the smallest model in the iPad Pro lineup.

This rumor is in line with a previous report from MacOtakara. The publication revealed that Apple will release three new iPad Pro tablets in the spring. The lineup would be comprised of 7.9-inch, 10.1-inch and 12.9-inch models.

The 7.9-inch iPad Pro model, touted to be the successor of the iPad mini 4, would be equipped with a Smart Connector, a True Tone display, four speakers, quad microphones and a 12-megapixel rear iSight camera with True Tone flash. Aside from upgraded specs, the tablet will likely gain a thinner but more durable chassis. It is said that Apple is planning to streamline its iPad Pro lineup by offering similar specs and features across the board.

Interestingly, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is a reliable source when it comes to Apple's upcoming devices, also predicted the arrival of three iPad Pro models this year. However, he made no mention of a 7.9-inch device and instead said that the third model will be 9.7 inches in size. This could indicate that Apple might discontinue the iPad mini lineup after all.

However, Apple has not commented on the rumors and speculations regarding the iPad mini 5 so the information should be taken with a grain of salt.
