iPhone 7 Release Date Rumors: Features iOS 9, RAM Upgrade for Faster Experience
An even faster iPhone awaits users amid reports that Apple is planning to boost its flagship phones' RAM memory from 1GB to 2GB in the upcoming launch of its new iOS 9 and iPhone 7.
Forbes said while the iPhone 6 versions are already extremely fast, the new RAM could "quadruple current iPhone memory performance."
Also with the new RAM, the iPhone would be much faster when multitasking and when launching apps that require a lot of memory to run.
The 1GB of LPDDR3 RAM contained on the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus is already much faster compared to the RAM on other top-of-the-line smartphones as it has a bandwidth of 32Gbps. This is twice the amount that is provided by the DDR3 RAM that is used by other flagship devices from Samsung such as the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5 and even the Nexus 6 from Google/Motorola.
News of the shift to 2GB of LPDDR4 RAM originated from Apple's supplier chain in Asia and was reported on the website Technews. While this might sound innocuous to many as other smartphones and phablets have moved onto 2 and 3 GB of RAM, this indicates that Apple may be bringing major changes to its new iOS 9 which necessitates a RAM upgrade.
In Apple's last major operating system release, the iOS8, only minor services such as Pay and HealthKit were introduced. Sources said this could mean that Apple is saving the big changes for iOS9.
In terms of pricing, Apple's smartphones already have a premium price tag. With the RAM upgrade, prices could go even higher. The LPDDR4 RAM is currently priced 35 percent higher than the current LPDDR3 RAM.
