LG G4 vs BlackBerry Passport: Keyboard Edge for Passport but LG G4 Ahead Elsewhere

The BlackBerry Passport, left, versus the LG G4, right | BLACKBERRY/LG

BlackBerry brought out the distinctive square-bodied Passport last year in an attempt to regain even a portion of its once huge market share in smartphones. One of its rivals is the LG G4 phablet, which was launched recently. Here is a comparison between the two devices.

Design

The Passport has a steel frame, which gives it a solid appearance, and a physical keyboard running along its bottom half, which makes typing very easy. Its back panel is made from plastic with a soft touch finish. Its most striking element is its square body, which makes it appear larger than its competitors.

On the other hand, the LG G4 has a traditional phablet design but with a curve, dubbed the "SlimArc," running from top to bottom. The phablet has a plastic body with back panels fashioned from polycarbonate in three colors: grey, gold, and ceramic white. To add a touch of class to the device, LG provided it with a choice of optional leather back panels dyed in natural colors. Anyone of these can be swapped with the default panel.

Display

Comparing their displays, the Passport has a smaller IPS LCD screen as the bottom portion of the phone houses the physical keyboard. This display measures 4.5 inches with a resolution of 1440 x 1440 pixels and a density of 453 pixels per inch. As for the LG G4, it has an IPS LCD screen measuring 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels and a density of 538 pixels per inch.

Specs

LG decided not to use the better Snapdragon 810 chipset and instead opted for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 on the G4. It is coupled along with a hexa-core CPU with two Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 1.82 GHz, four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.44 GHz and an Adreno 418 GPU. On the Passport is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset along with a quad-core Krait 400 CPU clocked at 2.26 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU.

Memory

Both devices have memory slots. Each can be used to add up to 128 GB of external storage. When it comes to RAM, both have 3 GB each.

Camera

The camera on the LG G4 is a 16-megapixel version while the Passport has a 13-megapixel shooter. Both have optical image stabilization.

Price

The LG G4 could be priced at $199 with a two-year contract. The BlackBerry Passport costs $600 at full retail and could cost $249 with a two-year contract.
