'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' season 4 plot news: S.H.I.E.L.D. to undertake major organizational changes, to be headed by new Director
"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," or easily "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," aired in May the action-filled finale episode of its third season, leaving fans with cliffhanging scenes whose setting sees the heroes six months after winning the war against Hive (Brett Dalton).
Daisy "Skye" Johnson (Chloe Bennet) is shown seemingly to have gone solo using her Inhuman powers to work independently, while scientist Dr. Holden Radcliffe (John Hannah) is seen in the middle of an experiment or perhaps an ongoing project that may be involving the dead being duplicated into life. While these are suspenseful scenes for viewers to ponder on, the post-credits also included an insinuation about S.H.I.E.L.D. being presided over by a new director.
In the six-months-later teaser, Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), who is shown to have lost Daisy in their operation to track her down, is heard saying: "I'll have to call the director. She struck out again." This line of his appears to be a tell-tale hint that someone else has taken over the directorial seat of S.H.I.E.L.D. within the course of six months and that Coulson will now be working as a field agent instead.
In Gregg's interview with The Entertainment Weekly, he said that even he is kept in the dark where this development in the plot is concerned, although he expressed that it would be "magnificent" if it were Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) who were to be the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Gregg believes that the flying ace and expert martial artist has earned the right to the entitlement. Agent May has proved herself to be capable of being a good commander and she will be a leader whom Coulson will follow and treat with absolute respect and loyalty.
Despite Gregg's personal character choice for the S.H.I.E.L.D. Director post, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s fictional world has other options to choose from. The actor mentioned about the "government bureaucracies" within which S.H.I.E.L.D. is entangled. Given these circumstances, in addition to the beginning of the Sokovia Accords and the end of the Civil War, there is a chance that the people behind the selection of the new S.H.I.E.L.D. Director will pick someone from outside the team.
"I have a feeling it will be someone somewhat less qualified than Coulson to run S.H.I.E.L.D.," Gregg said.
It should not take long before fans find this out when "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." returns to ABC for its fourth season later this year.
