'Mr. Robot' season 2 release date, spoilers news: New season premiere 'leaks' on social media 3 days early
"Mr. Robot" fans received a major surprise from USA Network on Sunday night.
In a clever publicity stunt disguised as an fsociety attack, the network dropped the first half of the season 2 premiere three days prior to its scheduled release date.
The "Mr. Robot" season 2 premiere was made available on various social media channels as well as the network's official website.
On Sunday night, the network held a Facebook Live Q&A session hosted by Keegan-Michael Key and featuring interviews with the show's cast. Things seemed to be going well until around 20 minutes in, when fsociety hacked the livestream. The fictional hacker organization then gave fans what they have been waiting for. The first 60 minutes of the two-part premiere episode began to stream right then and there.
After the season 2 premiere's first half was aired, the preview disappeared from Facebook but later became available on YouTube, Snapchat, Twitter, and the USA Network official website.
On Monday morning, the network announced via social media that "Mr. Robot" fans will be able to watch the show's season 2 premiere episode through various social media platforms.
"This is your ONLY chance," the announcement from the "Mr. Robot" official Twitter account read. "Watch the #MrRobot season_2.0 early premiere from the beginning NOW before it's removed."
According to an image posted by the said account, fans can watch the "Mr. Robot" season 2 premiere via Twitter (@WhoIsMrRobot) at 8:30 p.m., via Snapchat (BuzzFeed Discover Channel) at 8: 45 p.m., and via YouTube (WhoIsMrRobot channel) and on the USA Network homepage at 9 p.m.
According to Variety, the surprise sneak peek is just one of a series of stunts designed to drum up hype for the show's upcoming season 2 debut.
"Mr. Robot," which premiered in June 2015, has been a breakout hit, earning multiple awards in its first season and launching the career of Rami Malek, its star.
"Mr. Robot" season 2 premieres Wednesday, July 13, at 10 p.m. ET on USA.
