Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 release date, specs news: Next-gen mobile processor to launch at CES 2017
Qualcomm has announced that its next-generation central processing unit (CPU) for mobile devices, the Snapdragon 835, will be launched at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2017. In a series of posts on Twitter, Qualcomm teased that the Snapdragon 835 will "come into focus" and "becomes reality" at the upcoming trade show.
The highly anticipated mobile processor was first introduced in November when the company announced its collaboration with Samsung. The premium Snapdragon 835 will be built using Samsung's cutting edge 10-nanometer (nm) FinFET process technology.
Qualcomm announced that compared to the 14 nm FinFET process, Samsung's 10 nm technology will achieve greater power efficiency by up to 30 percent, an increase in performance by 27 percent and lower power consumption by 40 percent. The use of this processor will allow upcoming devices to come with newer capabilities that will help enhance users' experience. It also has a smaller footprint so smartphone manufacturers will have more space under the hood to integrate a larger battery or utilize a slimmer form factor.
The new processor will also be mated to the Adreno 540 graphics processing unit (GPU) which also comes with significant improvements over its predecessor, the Adreno 530 graphics card. Furthermore, the Snapdragon 835 also comes with Quick Charge 4 technology which allows devices to gain up to five hours of battery life after just five minutes of charging.
Samsung's next-generation flagship device, the Galaxy S8, is highly expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor. The upcoming LG G6 and Xiaomi Mi6 are also rumored to use the new chipset. Mobile devices with the Snapdragon 835 processor are expected to arrive in the market in the first half of 2017.
More details and technical specifications for the Snapdragon 835 will be announced by Qualcomm during CES 2017, to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada from Jan. 3 to 8, 2017. Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf will deliver the keynote address on Friday, Jan. 6, 2017 at 9 a.m. PST or 12 p.m. EST.
