'Samurai Jack' season 5 news 2016: Jack will be different and no longer a hero; revival to be darker in tone
"Samurai Jack" season 5 comes 12 years after the last season of the hit Cartoon Network series ended. The time that passed will be written in on the show, and will be an opportunity to spin the story.
Writer Darrick Bachman said at the Anime Expo via IGN that fans will see the titular character "in a new light." He promised that a new Jack will be featured in the revival series and that the years that came by changed the warrior.
"In the original series he was very heroic person on a very rigid quest. Now we pick up with him and it's many years after the fact and he's a little bit lost," Bachman said.
"So it's a story of redemption and him trying to find who he is again," he said of what "Samurai Jack" season 5 will be all about. Indeed, even in the season preview, Jack sported a beard and looked rather menacing.
In line with this change, "Samurai Jack" season 5 will also be a bit more mature since it will be aired on Adult Swim and not on its original home Cartoon Network.
Just how more adult the show will become, "Samurai Jack" creator and director Genndy Tartakovsky said that the show will be darker and "just as badass" if not more.
"I didn't want to go full on heads getting chopped off and blood spurting everywhere, but at the same time I also wanted it to be newer and exciting and take advantage of some of those things," he said.
Because of these changes, new fans can easily jump into the series without having to watch the first four seasons. The original finale and the "Samurai Jack" season 5 premiere won't be connected.
Although there will be a lot of new things to expect in "Samurai Jack" season 5, the voice behind the character will remain the same as Phil Marr will once again bring Jack to life as he did more than a decade ago.
"Samurai Jack" season 5 is slated to premiere either later this year or early next year on Adult Swim.
