'Suicide Squad' spoilers & cast news 2016: Scott Eastwood playing neither Slade Wilson nor Dick Grayson?
One of the things DC fans are looking forward to the most in the upcoming "Suicide Squad" is the unveiling of the mystery character played by up-and-coming actor Scott Eastwood.
Over the past year, rumors have been swirling about the possibility of Eastwood playing a DC Comics character, which fans have pegged to be either Slade Wilson or Dick Grayson. Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, is a villain of the Teen Titans who holds a grudge against Green Arrow. Dick Grayson, who is closely associated with Batman, was created as the original incarnation of Robin.
However, recent reports indicate that Eastwood is playing neither Wilson nor Grayson and that he may be playing instead a character who isn't from the DC Comics.
According to Collider, the actor is playing a Navy SEAL who is part of the team working with the Suicide Squad. The outlet noted that this character isn't from the DC Comics.
Collider's report coincides with that of ComicBook.com, which recently spoke with "Suicide Squad" producer Richard Suckle. Interestingly, Suckle told the website that Eastwood's role is a pivotal one that was written in and out of the screenplay at various stages of the project.
"He's a very important part of the film and works directly alongside Colonel Flag in the mission," the film's producer said. "That's kind of really the best way to describe it."
"He was sort of a last minute piece of casting by a bunch of different actors for these roles," he added. "His character was sort of existing, then it wasn't going to exist in the movie, and David [Ayer] wanted to bring him back. It kind of went through a back and forth and Scott just kind of naturally found a place and he had had a pre-existing working relationship [with Ayer]."
Suckle also spoke about the various fan theories about Eastwood's as-yet-undisclosed character, saying that he had read the theories and that no one has guessed correctly.
According to Comic Book Movie, Suckle's comment about the fan theories could mean that Eastwood is playing neither Wilson nor Grayson, as these are the two most popular guesses for the actor's role in "Suicide Squad." The outlet also noted that Eastwood's character could be someone who goes on to have a larger role in the DC Extended Universe.
"Suicide Squad" hits theaters Aug. 5.
