'The Elder Scrolls 6' release date, latest news & updates: Nobody is working on 'Elder Scrolls 6,' says Pete Hines

"The Elder Scrolls 6" has not been officially announced and is not in development at Bethesda Game Studios.

Bethesda's vice president of public relations and marketing Pete Hines first confirmed this back in August during a Twitter exchange with an "Elder Scrolls" fan.

"[F]yi, the elder scrolls vi isn't in development," he wrote at the time. "[W]e simply said we would make it eventually. [D]on't want people to be misled," he added.

But while Hines has already announced that "The Elder Scrolls 6" is not in the works, fans of the action role-playing open world fantasy video game series will not let the issue rest, with some insisting that the next installment may already be in the very early stages of development.

Recently, another "Elder Scrolls" fan added to the conversation from August, saying that Hines' announcement was merely PR jargon for "yes we're working on it but pre alpha status." Hines responded to this, writing: "[N]o, it just means nobody is working on it."

When the fan persisted, saying that this is not how Bethesda has operated in the past, Hines shut him down, writing: "[N]o. It isn't in development."

Another Twitter user chimed in, questioning why Bethesda isn't yet working on "The Elder Scrolls 6" when it should be. To this, Hines said: "[T]hey have two other games they want to work on first. They have a right to decide what they want to work on."

It is unclear which two video games these are, but Bethesda has recently wrapped up work on "Dishonored 2," which comes out this week, and on the final downloadable content for "Fallout 4." The studio has also just released "Skyrim: Special Edition" for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Given that Bethesda is not currently working on "The Elder Scrolls 6," it may be safe to assume that fans won't be getting any updates about the upcoming game in 2017. Because these games take years to make, fans probably shouldn't expect the game to be released in 2017 or 2018.
