'The Walking Dead' season 7 spoilers: Did Daryl use Morse code to tell Rick where the Sanctuary is?
Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Rick (Andrew Lincoln) weren't allowed to speak to each other during their brief reunion in the latest episode of "The Walking Dead" season 7, but did Daryl nonetheless manage to convey an important message to Rick on the sly?
In "Service," the fourth episode of the zombie apocalypse drama's current season, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and the Saviors made their way to Alexandria, bringing their prisoner, Daryl. This was the first time Daryl saw his friends after Negan bashed Glenn's (Steven Yeun) and Abraham's (Michael Cudlitz) heads in in the season premiere. Since that fateful night, the Saviors had Daryl locked up in the Sanctuary, where he was continuously tormented with beatings and psychological torture.
While Daryl was mute during the entire episode, "The Walking Dead" fans are convinced that he was able to communicate an important message to Rick via Morse code and blinking.
According to the "Walking Dead" theorists, Daryl's blinking in one important scene wasn't merely a result of his torture at the Sanctuary. Rather, they say, he was doing it on purpose and was using Morse code to blink a message to Rick. Upon rewatching this pivotal scene, it does appear that Rick is paying special attention to Daryl's face.
In addition, an earlier scene may have provided a clue to this secret communication. Before Negan arrived at Alexandria, a scene showed Rick walking through his home. As he does so, the camera shows a giant wall sign featuring American Morse code.
So what was Daryl supposedly telling Rick with his blinking?
While the interpretations vary, many point to Redditor AMALLAMAAMA's version as the most accurate. According to the Reddit user, Daryl blinked out "I EAST" in the scene.
ComicBook.com suggests that this may be a clue to the location of the Sanctuary, which is currently still unknown. Daryl may have been trying to tell Rick that the Sanctuary is somewhere east of Alexandria or some other prominent location such as the Hilltop. The outlet also notes that Rick may have decoded this message but that he is keeping it from the rest for the time being.
"The Walking Dead" season 7 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.
