'True Detective' season 3 news 2016: Will fans get to see another season? Who will serve as showrunner?
The fate of HBO's anthology crime drama "True Detective" has yet to be known. Despite its reported renewal until 2018, the third season of "True Detective" might be taking more time before it will go into production and then finally be released. It is the showrunner who will be handling the show that is still in question.
There was a recent ad on HBO wherein the network features and lists down all of its shows that have already concluded and are streaming as completed series. A part of the ad included a peek at "True Detective." In spite of this, Fansided wrote that if "True Detective" were really over, the ad should have included the first season of the show — since it was more popular than the second one — but it did not. However, the series is "technically over" until its official renewal for another season, which fans barely have a verified idea about.
According to IndieWire, "True Detective" showrunner Nic Pizzolatto signed an overall contract with HBO and it reportedly includes an option to push through with and a new way to run a new season for the crime series. As per Variety, the executive producer was presented with these other options, namely that he will work with a staff of writers, that he will introduce a new showrunner, or that he will work and write for the show on his own again. Whichever choice he might pick, Pizzolatto, who also has other projects in the pipeline with the entertainment giant, will stay as a "True Detective" executive producer. In other words, he was handed over with full authority over the development of the show for another season.
While "True Detective" season 1 was a remarkable success in terms of rating and quality, its successor proved to have struggled and was received quite negatively. Michael Lombardo, HBO's president of programming, shared his take about this with The Frame. The network executive said that he "takes the blame." He further explained that as the show turned out to be a huge success, he wanted to replicate it the year that followed." So he set Pizzolatto to deliver in a rather short time frame which was indeed challenging and which Lombardo said should not have been the case.
Fans will have to watch out more news that will hopefully clear the air on the development of another season of "True Detective."
