'Vampire Diaries' Season 6 Cast News: Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed Wedding Plans Announced

Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder of 'Vampire Diaries' are not wasting any time formalizing their relationship. After a whirlwind romance lasting six months, they have announced their engagement.

According to U.S. Magazine, Reed accepted Somerhalder proposal with "glee," and their friends said the couple were "crazy happy."

Somerhalder proposed with a vintage "diamond eternity band," which is actually a wedding ring and not like a typical engagement ring. Rumors of a possible engagement started after he was spotted shopping for rings. Since news of their engagement broke, several sources have confirmed it to various magazines and news outlets.

If their plans push through, this will be the first marriage for Somerhalder and the second for Reed. All indications point to the two actors tying the knot this year. Somerhalder even hinted on his Instagram account that this year would be a good one for Nikki and him. They started living together a few weeks after embarking on their relationship. They also have adopted two horses Eagle and Millie, and have a kitten Sohalia and two dogs Nietzsche and Enzo.

Somerhalder, who currently stars on the "Vampire Diaries," had previously been dating his series co-star Nina Dobrev for almost three years before they decided to end their relationship in May 2013. This led many fans of the series to call for their reconciliation so they could rekindle their relationship, but it did not happen.

Instead, Somerhalder started dating Reed, who was one of Dobrev's friends, in April 2014 after she split from her husband, Paul McDonald. Reed also dated Derek Hough for about a month before she started going out with Somerhalder.

When they began dating, friends who are close to the couple said the two had been attracted to each other for years and so had a solid groundwork for their relationship. They also added that since they had always been in relationships with other people, they had not acted on their feelings. But when the time came for them to express their feelings for each other, "they knew it was right."
