2 Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan Bomb Attack

Two soldiers were killed in an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan when a bomb detonated in their vehicle, local authorities say. Although the nationality of the soldiers has yet to be released, several media outlets are suggesting the soldiers were American. 

The soldiers were reportedly traveling through the country's capital when the bomb detonated, killing both servicemen. Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said in a statement that the bomb was either attached to the car while it was en route, or had been attached earlier and detonated via remote control.

"It was a magnetic bomb," Sediqqi said. "It was either attached to the vehicle belonging to the foreigners or it was planted and detonated remotely."

The New York Times reports that contrary to Sediqqi's statement, the bomb was actually placed on a median in the middle of a busy intersection and detonated by remote control. The bomb reportedly went off at around 8:45 a.m. Monday and also injured an Afghan passerby.

There have recently been multiple bombs detonated throughout Afghanistan in public places. On Sunday, a suicide bomber reportedly detonated a bomb at a large volleyball game in eastern Afghanistan, killing over 40 people. Another bomb exploded later Monday near the country's Kunduz province in the north, killing six and wounding five.

The country's intelligence agency blamed Sunday's Volleyball attack on the Haqqani group, an Islamic extremist group affiliated with the Taliban.

"We have evidence that shows the Haqqani network was behind the attack," Sediqi told the AFP, adding that more information on the attack will be available following an internal investigation.
