Mercedes-Benz is expected to introduce the next-generation CLS luxury coupe in 2018. Even though the German automobile manufacturer has yet to issue an official statement, a prototype of the vehicle was recently spotted giving car enthusiasts a sneak peek of the exterior design.

A few days ago, a Mercedes-Benz prototype vehicle was seen on the road in Europe. There was no indication of what car was being tested and its body was covered by vinyl stickers. However, its dimensions clearly pointed to it being the new CLS coupe. This was hinted by the sloping roofline, the distinct front fascia, and its large size.

While there are bound to be tons of changes and new features in the 2018 version, spy shots suggest that it will not be significantly different from the current version of the CLS.

According to reports, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS will be built using the Modular Rear Architecture (MRA). This is the same platform used by the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan. Thus, it is expected that the upcoming CLS coupe will come with a lighter yet sturdier body structure. With a longer wheelbase, there will also be more room inside the cabin.

Furthermore, use of the MRA platform will also mean that the new CLS will come with the same powertrains as the E-Class sedan, including an electronic variant. Consumers could also possibly see a model equipped with the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that delivers 604 horsepower seen in the E 63 S.

Powertrain options may include the new inline six-cylinder engine that Mercedes is planning to introduce next year via the updated S-Class sedan. It is set to replace the current V6 engine. Unfortunately, a Shooting Brake variant isn't likely to be released due to low sales of the model.

Advanced technologies are also expected including semiautonomous driving features such as Speed Limit Pilot and Active Lane Change Assist.

According to Automotive News, the Mercedes-Benz CLS is going to arrive at U.S. dealerships sometime in summer 2018.

However, given that Mercedes has yet to reveal any official information about the 2018 CLS, information about the upcoming vehicle should be taken with a grain of salt.
