2018 Volkswagen Tiguan release date, specs, price news: compact crossover with longer wheelbase unveiled at Detroit Auto Show
Volkswagen used the Detroit Auto Show as a stage to introduce the 2018 Tiguan. The compact crossover vehicle is more sophisticated and spacious and has been designed to meet the needs of American customers.
"The new Tiguan demonstrates how we plan to give American customers the usability and versatility they demand without sacrificing style or Volkswagen's trademark driving dynamics. Every detail of the Tiguan has been thoughtfully engineered for our U.S. customers to maximize space and convenience, while retaining its performance, agility, and value," said Hinrich J. Woebcken, CEO of the North American Region, Volkswagen.
The 2018 Tiguan is built using Volkswagen's Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture which allows for a longer wheelbase. The all-new compact crossover has been stretched by 10.7 inches, which translates to 57 percent more cargo space. The 109.9-inch wheelbase also provides seating up to five passengers via the sliding second row with an option for a third row.
When it comes to the exterior design, the all-new Tiguan demonstrates Volkswagen's clean and timeless design language. The compact crossover has a wider and lower stance, as well as a sharper and stronger appearance. Meanwhile, the Tiguan's interiors have been refreshed to feature a premium rhombus pattern. The optional Volkswagen Digital Cockpit allows drivers to reconfigure instrument panel while the Car-Net system allows seamless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink. Optional features include a panoramic sunroof, power tailgate and the Fender Premium audio system.
The 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan will be powered by an updated 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injected TSI engine that delivers 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. The powertrain will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Customers can also opt for the 4Motion with Active Control all-wheel-drive system.
For the protection of the driver and passengers, Volkswagen will offer the following assistive technologies for the 2018 Tiguan: Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency braking with Pedestrian Monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert and Lane Departure Warning. The compact crossover comes standard with a rearview camera.
Volkswagen has not yet announced pricing and availability for the 2018 Tiguan.
