'Agents of SHIELD' Season 2 Premiere Date, Spoilers: New Season Will See Series Takes a Dark Turn

"Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." Season 2 is expected to take a dark turn when it premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 9 p.m. EDT on ABC.

"This is a make or break moment," Agent Phil Coulson says ominously in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 teaser, providing clues on what to expect in future episodes.

"The enemy has the advantage, but we need to fight on for those we've lost. So, their sacrifices they made were not made in vain," Coulson adds.

In the finale of Season 1, S.H.I.E.L.D. finds itself nearly destroyed following an assault by HYDRA. Following the events in the first season, which were tied to the plot from the Marvel film "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," S.H.I.E.L.D. is now considered a terrorist organization by the entire world.

Former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is presumed dead after he is forced to go into hiding. Before doing so, he taps Coulson to replace him as S.H.I.E.L.D. boss.

With Fury gone, Coulson tries to rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D. using its limited resources. The already covert spy agency becomes even more secretive "like ghosts," in the words of Coulson. "That's how we have to live now...in the shadows...to protect the innocent...to save lives...even when they don't know it," the new spy chief says.

Meanwhile, new field operative Skye is now aware of her mysterious past. S.H.I.E.L.D. has designated her a "0-8-4," a term for objects of unknown origins. In other words, she is presumably an alien. But she doesn't show it as she lookss cool and professional.

In Season 2, Skye becomes a full-fledged agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agent Leo Fitz, the lovable engineer, is still comatose after he escaped from the bottom of the ocean with Jemma Simmons in the Season 1.

Simmons survived the ordeal but Fitz was barely alive when he made it to the surface. He was placed in a hyperbaric chamber to recover from his injuries. Having been deprieved of oxygen for too long, he is suspected to have incurred brain damage.

Marvel and ABC have released a promo featuring Fitz on their Facebook page. The new poster teases: "What will he become?"

If his brain functions are damaged, this would definitely devastate his partner Simmons.

One of the controversial characters in the show is Agent Grant Ward. The teaser shows him wearing prison clothes and locked in a maximum security prison, presumably under S.H.I.E.L.D. management.

This is the same agent who earlier saved the lives of team members including Simmons and Skye.

However, it turns out that Ward is working for HYDRA as an undercover operative. His heroic actions turned out to be part of his deception. He finally shows his true colors when he kills Agent Victoria Hand in Season 1's episode 17.

Grant is also the one who dumps Fitz and Simmons into the ocean, nearly drowning them.
