'American Idol' Season 14 Top 10 Performances and Results: New Show Format Working?
"American Idol" Season 14 has introduced a new format. Instead of the tried and tested two nights per week – a performance night and a results night – the show now has a two-hour single show every Wednesday, wherein the contestants sing the song that would hopefully ensure their stay for another week.
Under the new format, the show begins with the announcement of last week's results by host Ryan Seacrest. As each contestant's name is called, the contestant performs the song that the public will vote on. The results will be announced on the following week.
Billboard is not particularly happy with the new presentation. The article pointed out that the contestants feel rushed after being told they can stay before they perform onstage. Early performances showed the contestants running into a lot of issues and getting thrown off their game because of the way the format worked. The shortened show also meant less time for the judges to give comprehensive and good critique.
Last Wednesday was Movie Night, and the contestants had to sing songs from the movies, with Nile Rodgers as mentor.
First saved was Adanna Duru. She sang "I Love You I Do" from the movie "Dreamgirls." She was dressed for the part and it was a decent start to the show. The judges were in agreement, with just some suggestions. J-Lo wanted more emotion. Harry told Adanna to sing to the audience and not the camera.
Second saved was Daniel Seavey, and he sang "Lost Stars." The audience loved him, and the judges were soft on him. Seavey was arguably not a very strong singer to have survived thus far, but the votes are what counts in "American Idol."
Third saved was Rayvon Owen who sang "Staying Alive." The performance was done mostly in falsetto. Although Owen had a good falsetto voice, the performance was a bit sleepy. Harry wondered how Owen would remain interesting to the audience as he asked him for more substance. Keith wanted more stage presence.
Fourth saved was Nick Fradiani and he sang "Danger Zone." It was another so-so performance as Fradiani seemed a bit lost without his guitar. Harry thought the song was wrong for Nick, and J-Lo commented that Nick should own his "hotness."
Fifth saved was Joey Cook who sang "Mad World," definitely one of the best performances of the night. Jo-Lo compared her to Sia. Harry told Joey to expand on her lane, although she had a "great song and a great choice." Keith praised her for going on a different direction.
Sixth saved was Tyanna Jones who sang "Circle of Life" from "The Lion King." Harry said Tyanna tried too hard and missed the mark. Keith said Tyanna had pitch issues. J-Lo said she was sure Tyanna would do better next week.
Seventh saved was Quentin Alexander and he gave a very different rendition of the song "You're the One That I Want" from Grease. The arrangement was totally different from the original and it was hauntingly beautiful, according to J-Lo. Keith told Quentin to loosen up a bit. But Harry had issues with Quentin favoring emotion over pitch, calling the performance "horribly out of tune."
Eighth saved was Maddie Walker, and she sang "Let's Hear It for the Boys." The judges did not like the performance. J-Lo called it "cute." Harry said it felt "pageant-y." Keith said it was about song choice.
Ninth saved was Clark Beckham, and he sang "Sunday Morning." The judges agreed it was a good performance.
Last saved was Jax, and she sang "I Wanna Grow Old With You." Keith said it was beautiful. J-Lo said it was perfect for the quirkiness in Jax's voice. Harry said Jax was a high-risk/high-reward performer and it paid off.
That left Qaasim Middleton, who needed to sing for the judges' save. He sang "Come Together," giving it his all and providing one of the best performances of the night. Harry was the one that had to tell Qaasim whether he got the save or not, and yes, Qaasim got the save!
This Wednesday night, March 25, the contestants tackle song from the 80's and Boy George will be their mentor.
