Android 5.0 Lollipop Update on Samsung Galaxy S5, S4, S3, Other Galaxy S Series Phones Getting Latest OS
The roll-out of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to Samsung's flagship Galaxy S series of smartphones is in progress and significant headway has been covered.
Here is a summary of the status by device type so far:
Samsung Galaxy S5: Three of the four major carriers in the U.S. have already rolled out the Android 5.0 Lollipop to Samsung's flagship smartphones. Verizon was the first to release the update to customers in early February. Sprint followed suit, and then T-mobile. This leaves only AT&T as the carrier where the update is still pending.
Samsung Galaxy S4: The roll-out to the S4 has not yet happened in the U.S. However Samsung rolled out an update of the international version of the device in Russia in the last days of January. On Feb 10, India users received the update. U.S. users can expect an update soon if Samsung follows the same approach it used for the S5.
Samsung Galaxy S3: Rumor has it that Samsung will not roll out the Android 5.0 Lollipop to the S3. The device is over two years old and still has not received an Android 4.4.4 KitKat Update. Samsung has never officially confirmed the update for the S3, but others say that with Samsung's confirmation that Galaxy Note 2 will receive a Lollipop update, there is hope for the S3 after all, since the Note 2 was released only a few months after the S3.
Galaxy S5 Mini, Galaxy S5 Active, Galaxy Alpha: The Android 5.0 Lollipop is expected to be available for both specialized variants of the S5, as well as the Alpha, but no progress has yet been reported on the roll-out to these devices. Considering that Samsung is focusing on its flagship devices first, these updates may still be a few months away.
However, in the Philippines, the Android 5.0 Lollipop is now rolling out to Samsung Galaxy S5.
