Nexus 7 may be a few years old, but the Asus-manufactured Google tablet will still receive the latest Android 7.1 Nougat update.

Reports claim that the Android Custom ROM developers have managed to come up with an Android 7.1.1 Nougat based AICP ROM that comes with custom features inspired from the CyanogenMod 14.1 (CM14.1) and AOSP. This will allow the Nexus 7 devices to enjoy the same mobile operating system (OS) that is already featured in Google's latest line of smartphones called the Pixel devices.

To be able to install the Android 7.1.1 Nougat based AICP ROM on the second-generation Nexus 7 that came out in 2013, users must download the Android 7.1.1 AICP custom ROM as well as the Google Apps for Nexus 7 on their computer. Then they must connect and mount the device's USB mass storage on the computer through the USB cable and copy the downloaded the AICP ROM zip file to the root folder that can be found on the SD card of the table.

After disconnecting the turned-off device from the computer, users must boot their devices into the Bootloader Mode by simultaneously pressing and holding its Volume up, Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time.

Then users are advised to follow the given instructions and choose the Bootloader option to be able to get into the recovery mode. They must also finish the full data wipe step just by clicking the Wipe Data/Factory Reset. They can push the Volume keys to choose between options while the Power button can be used to select an option while the device is in the Recovery Mode.

Users must also finish the Wipe Dalvik Cache task before returning to the main recovery menu to select the Install Zip from SD card option.

To install the Google Apps (Gapps), users must redo the Install Zip from SD card and Choose Zip from SD card steps. As soon as the Gapps and ROM are installed, users must choose "+++++Go Back+++++" and pick out the Reboot System Now that can be found on the Recovery menu.

Other Asus handsets are also expected to have the Android 7.1 Nougat update in 2017.
