Apple iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus Sales News: New iPhones Eat Away At Samsung's Profits
Recent reports indicated that the bigger screens of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus have helped Apple take a huge bite out of Samsung's profits in three major Asian countries, namely Korea, Japan and China.
The sales figures were reported by Counterpoint Research, which stated that in November 2014 the company sold 20 million units of the latest iPhones throughout the globe. This was a massive 26 percent jump from the same period in November 2013.
It was surprising that Samsung, the leading manufacturer of smartphones in the world, could not hold off Apple in South Korea, its home country. In that particular market Samsung's market share dropped from 60 to 46 percent in November while Apple increased its market share from 15 to 33 percent in the same month. During that same period, LG, another major player from South Korea in the mobile market, also saw it share drop to 14 percent.
The report from Counterpoint noted that the bigger screen sizes of the iPhone 6 and 6 plus were a major factor as the Korean market "earnestly needed a large screen iPhone for quite a time and now this thirst has been quenched."
It also added that Apple's share would have touched 40 percent if it had more devices to satisfy demand in the market.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Tom Kang, the Research Director for Mobile Devices at Counterpoint, said, "No foreign brand has managed to rise above the 20 percent market share mark in the history of Korea's smartphone industry, which has always been dominated by the global smartphone leader, Samsung."
In Japan meanwhile, Apple's market share surged to 51 percent in November up from about 15 percent. In doing so, it beat Sony which previously held the number two spot with a 17 percent market share. Finally in China, Apple has a 12 percent market share and is in third place behind leader Xiaomi which has 18 percent and Lenovo which has 13 percent.
