iPhone 8 release date, specs news: LG hopes to secure a deal with Apple to produce OLED screens for iPhone 8
Several reports have already emerged saying that Apple is planning to release the upcoming iPhone 8 next year with an OLED screen. According to the latest reports, LG is gearing up its OLED technology development in hopes to get a solid deal with Apple and shut Samsung out of the picture.
In a report by Bloomberg, LG is said to have raised its investment in OLED display as Apple is rumored to start the development of the iPhone 8 early next year. The battle to secure a sweet deal with the Cupertino-based company is certainly making a lot of noise in the tech industry today.
For many months now, rumors and speculations have been circulating all over the internet that the 8th generation of Apple's flagship smartphone will carry an OLED screen. If rumors prove to be true, LG is said to be already talking with Apple with regard to the OLED technology.
"It's true that we were late in OLED investment for smaller electronics devices compared to that of televisions. It's undeniable that flexible OLEDs are now the mega-trend in the mobile segment and we will have to embrace that," LG Display CEO Han Sang Beom explained.
Although Samsung is widely known as a pioneer in bringing the OLED feature on smartphones, LG has been manufacturing OLED display for many years now.
LG is also known to manufacture LCD screens, and although it seems like the direction the industry is going is favorable towards OLED displays, the company does not have any plan to quit producing quality LCD devices.
"We can't help but rely on LCDs for the time being because our revenue from OLEDs still accounts for less than 10%. We've never thought about giving up LCD, but we are considering gradually closing the older generation fabs," the CEO added.
Meanwhile, Apple has yet to confirm the reports with regard to the iPhone 8 development. Apparently, the company's main focus as of the moment is the iPhone 7, which is rumored to come out in September.
