Apple Watch vs Sony SmartWatch 3 Specs, Price Comparison: Features Review - Apple Watch Only Equal to SmartWatch 3 Specs-Wise

Apple may have a hit on its hands in the form of the Apple Watch which has already sold millions of units. But other smartwatches have been in the market longer. One of them, the Sony SmartWatch 3, has nearly the same specs as the Apple Watch but is cheaper. Here is how the two devices compare.

Design

Apple invested a lot in the design of its smartwatch which comes in three lines: a basic Apple Watch Sport with an aluminum body, the Apple Watch with a stainless steel body, and the solid gold Apple Watch edition which is the costliest. Each line has two sizes – a smaller 38mm version and a bigger 42mm version – both rectangular in shape. As for the bands on the Apple Watch, it can only be interchanged with others purchased from Apple. There is a huge variety ranging from steel to leather and sports bands created from Fluoroelastomer.

Coming to the Sony SmartWatch 3, it has a rectangular stainless steel body which can be popped out of the default band and put into another band sold by Sony. There are a number of bands to choose from ranging from plastic to steel. Sony also offers a custom holder kit for the SmartWatch 3, which allows it to be used with any standard 24mm strap.

Comparing their waterproof and dustproof ratings, the SmartWatch 3 has an IP 68 rating and can safely be immersed in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes while the Apple Watch can be used when showering and washing hands but cannot be immersed in water.

Display

The display on the Apple Watch differs according to the line, but some come with Sapphire crystal protection. The 38mm version has 302 pixels per inch while the 42mm version has 290 pixels per inch. As for the SmartWatch 3, it has a 1.6 inch transflective display with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels.

Specs

On the SmartWatch 3 is a Quad ARM A7 processor clocked at 1.2 Ghz, along with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB memory. The Apple Watch has a S1 chip which is an entire computer system and comes with 8 GB onboard storage. The Smartwatch 3 can only be paired with Android devices while the Apple Watch only works with iOS devices.

Sensors

The SmartWatch 3 has GPS, an ambient light sensor, accelerometer, compass and gyro, while the Apple Watch has a heart rate sensor, ambient light sensor, accelerometer and gyro.

Price

The Sony SmartWatch is priced at $249 while the 38mm version of the Apple Watch Sport is priced at $350. The 38mm version of the Apple Watch is priced at $550 while the Apple Watch Edition is priced from $12,000 to $17,000.
