'Aquaman' release date, news: Patrick Wilson cast as 'Aquaman' villain Orm
After casting Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry aka Aquaman and Amber Heard as Mera, Warner Bros. has finally found the right actor to play the villain in "Aquaman." Deadline has reported that "Watchmen" star Patrick Wilson has been cast to portray Orm aka Ocean Master in the film. Director James Wan also confirmed the casting news with a post on Twitter. Wilson has worked with Wan before on "Insidious," "Insidious: Chapter 2," and the two "Conjuring" movies.
Most fans may not know this, but Wilson actually played a role in another DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film. He wasn't seen onscreen, but Wilson provided the voice of the President of the United States in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Well, it's safe to say that he won't be reprising his role as the president in this film.
Orm is Arthur's human half-brother and he resented the fact that he didn't have any of his half-brother's powers. He eventually transforms himself into Ocean Master and gained his powers through technological means.
Orm's origin story was later retconned during DC's "The New 52" relaunch and the character was reintroduced as the full Atlantean half-brother of Arthur. Orm inherited the Atlantean throne when his father was killed, but the legitimacy of his reign was challenged after Vulko revealed that Arthur was the rightful heir to the throne since he was the firstborn son of Queen Atlanna. In both versions of the character, Orm has always been jealous of his brother.
So, which version of Orm will appear in "Aquaman"? Cameron Wade of Paste Magazine believes that the film will probably feature some version of the storyline introduced in "The New 52" relaunch since Arthur didn't look regal enough to be a king in the "Justice League" trailer. And Wan also wrote "#KingOrm" in his tweet, which indicates that Orm is probably sitting on the throne.
"Aquaman" is scheduled to premiere on Oct. 5, 2018.
