'Arrow' season 5B spoilers: show EP hints at a twist involving Felicity and it is not what fans think

Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) in "Arrow" season 5 promo still | The CW

The last time "Arrow" fans saw Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) was back in the midseason finale of the show, in which Oliver's (Stephen Amell) former fiancée was wallowing in sorrow after the shocking death of new beau, SCPD detective Billy Malone (guest star Tyler Ritter). Moving forward to the latter half of the show's current installment, a drastic turnaround for the character have been teased countless times. And this — coupled with rumors that the Black Canary who showed up is not really Laurel (Katie Cassidy) — speculations that the tech genius may actually pick up the character mantle.

During the recently held Television Critics Association winter presentation, "Arrow" executive producer Marc Guggenheim provides a bit of insight into the budding huge arc for Felicity, and how the recent events in her life will be bringing out something different in the way she perceives and operates.

"It's the sum of a bunch of stuff, and Billy was sort of the final straw. It's also the sum of the fact that Felicity's been living in this darker world for the last four-plus years now and one of the things we're exploring is how much what Oliver and Diggle and Roy and Laurel have been doing as vigilantes affected her and affected her way of thinking about things," he explained.

So does that confirm that she will eventually take on the role of Black Canary? Unfortunately, Guggenheim kept his cards close to his chest regarding this popular rumor. He, however, reiterated that "Arrow" has a knack for insinuating something which suddenly turns out to be entirely different from what is presumed — something that they endeavor to continue.

There is, however, a single thing for sure in this sea of uncertainties for Felicity: she will not be putting the blame on Oliver despite the vigilante-by-night killing her new lover, showrunner Wendy Mericle who co-wrote the midseason finale previously told TVLine.

"One thing Felicity is not going to do, I can tell you for sure, is blame Oliver. She recognizes the manipulations that have led to this situation," the series exec stated. "Her heart is broken in that last moment for Oliver and for Malone and for herself."

"Arrow" season 5 returns with new episodes on Jan 25, 8 p.m. ET.
