'Avatar 2' release date, news & update: Upcoming movie sequels to feature glass-less 3D and more creative tech advancements
"Avatar 2" may change the way people watch movies as James Cameron, multi-awarded filmmaker and creator of the top-grossing movie, seeks new and revolutionary ways to explore the world of Pandora once more.
Recent news about the upcoming movie sequel cited a statement made by Cameron regarding his plans to incorporate more immersive special effects into "Avatar 2" and its three follow-ups. When he was inducted as an honorary member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers last Friday, Oct. 28, Cameron stated his plans of taking even more strides in filmmaking innovations.
He said that aside from aiming for "better tools, workflow, high dynamic range or HDR and high frame rates (HFR)," he's also very adamant about bringing the "Avatar" sequels to the next level of 3D, with brighter projection and glass-less viewing.
"We'll get there," Cameron promised. The director, who has been lauded for his forward-thinking approach in filmmaking, has been challenging the limitations of art and technology with cinematic marvels such as "Aliens," "Titanic," and the "Terminator" movies.
While working on the first "Avatar" movie, which came out in 2009, he and his team had to create new software and develop revolutionary motion capture techniques to make each animated movement and facial expression more detailed and realistic. Cameron's team also made significant advances in 3D technology, while the entire project has been credited for creating about 900 jobs at Weta Digital.
The innovative filmmaker also added that magic should always amaze and evolve. "The audience's eyes adjust to what we did, and so we need to up our work," he said.
Aside from confirming that there will be four more "Avatar" movies and briefly sharing that the upcoming saga will be about Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri's (Zoe Saldana) family, details about the highly anticipated movie franchise are rather scarce. But now that Cameron seems to be more open about sharing details on his mega four-movie project, more information about the "Avatar" sequels may be revealed as the scheduled release date nears.
"Avatar 2" is expected to come out in December 2018, while the three follow-ups will follow suit in 2020, 2022, and 2023 respectively.
